Whilst looking through and Post-It noting Tim Walker's retrospective book Shoot for the Moon, I realised there are many more images I'd want to mention than the required four. In this post, I'll be exploring how these additional photos have inspired me, both in regards to our Portraits brief and in other personal ways.
Pen & Ink series, inspired by illustrator Audrey Beardsley:
One can easily see the influence of fantasy, fairytales and ancient art in this array of Walker's work. I was also really pleased to see that he had photographed Iris van Herpen's fashion, since she is one of my favourite couture designers (all the wavy, flowy lines). These photos particularly call out to me because the people portrayed all appear so distinct and unique, which are key principles of character design, a form of art that I'm passionate about. Not to mention that some of them literally reference classic literary characters, who illustrators and animators designed and brought to life in our cultural memory.
These portraits inspire me to come up with really in-depth, imaginative concepts for my own portraits, perhaps utilising make-up and bulkier, unconventional clothing choices to enhance the intended meanings through colour and shape. Looking back through Peter Renn's tableau/masquerade presentation, I feel that staged portraiture is definitely something I'd like to explore, which is very adjacent to Walker's portfolio.
