In spite of the title, please don't read this post in a zombie-groan voice.
Looking at the almost fluffy-looking tendrils of brain imaging and connectomes, covered in a previous post, reminded me of water grass and flowing seaweed - stock video (converted & collaged to gif) examples below. This made me recount my snorkelling experience, seeing literal 'brain corals' as I floated around this alien world, brimming with life despite the gloom. I then remembered some artworks I'd saved a while back depicting fish swimming in the air through dense cities, blending urban illustration with organic fantasy - collaged below for reference, alongside some stills from the ending of Rise of the Guardians (Sandman's dreams returning to the suburban children). Drawing from an idea shared in a previous post (skyscraper made of brain matter), the underwater bases of Subnautica and one of my favourite webcomic creator's motifs (little figurative animals living in your brain that ward off unhelpful thoughts - Samantha Davies at tapas.io), I may try and coalesce these ideas visually into a photobash, some coloured sketches and a roughly animated gif.
Another connection that came up for me was the animated film covered in my documentary research post, Chris Landreth's Ryan (2004). Certain stills from this experimental animation, notably the coloured hair wrapping around the characters, could be interpreted as visceral expressions of emotional pain or a tormented psyche (referring to Ryan Larkin's addiction, lost potential and "inner deformities"), drawing visual links to the coloured threads depicted in brain connectomes - collaged below.
